Trying to locate a more positive frame of mine, I land on some things I think we did right - or, if not right, then in a way that with hindsight I now see as preferable to the alternative.

.

.

  1. Bought life insurance

.

We were renewing our mortgage and our broker asked if we wanted to upgrade our life insurance.

.

We were already paying £150 a month for something that, at that time, it seemed certain we’d never need.

.

Here’s a policy that includes income protection, critical illness cover and life cover she said.

It’s £300 a month.

.

We were reluctant.

.

That is a lot of money we told her.

Yes she said.

But the average age of a cancer claimant is now 45 she told us.

.

This was back in ‘21 when we were moving out of London to buy our new house by the sea.

.

You were 43 and I was 42.

.

After many long conversations she persuaded us and we purchased the policies.

.

Less than 2 years later - a year short of your 45th birthday - you received your diagnosis and we began claiming.

.

First the critical illness payout.

Then the income protection.

And finally the life cover.

.
