I decide I can no longer live in fear.

.

So I call Bupa and book a prostate exam and colon CT scan.

.

That will be £1,192. How would you like to pay?

.

I raid our modest savings.

.

Thank you that’s gone through.

Just make sure you don’t ejaculate in the 48 hour leading up to the appointment.

.

Understood.

.

…

.

Hello Mr Perrin.

Take a seat.

I just have a few questions for you and then we’ll begin the exam.

.

Okay.

.

Then in a few days time the team will be in touch to arrange your scan.

You’ll have to do some prep for the scan - take some medication to ensure your bowels are empty.

.

Yes, I’m familiar with the process.

My wife had to do it many times.

.

She died of bowel cancer two years ago.

.

I see.

I’m so sorry.

.

Thank you.

.

So do you have any symptoms or concerns or is this just for peace of mind?

.

Yes.

I mean no

no symptoms.

Just

yeah

peace of mind.

.

Okay.

.

And no family history of cancer.

.

Not that I’m aware of.

.

Okay.

And you’re how old let’s see -

.

45 last Friday.

.

Ah yes.

Okay.

Happy birthday.

Belatedly.

.

Thank you.

.

Shall we get started with the examination?

.

Okay.

.

Here’s what will happen:
